Why? You can have a great defence and fleet with the current income mechanics.

Got 13k troop defense vs 7k attacking troops, still lose a ton of land. How in bloody hell does base defenses work?

Don't go with just barracks. Supplement with air squadrons, shore batteries, mines and artillery. All of those boost your troops effectiveness.

Am semi expert, have a fairly stellar island defence force.

Land captured = defenders land * .05 * attackers marines / defenders marines

Right now all the various defenses just add to the defending marine strength, but this whole thing is going to be coming up for a rework asset some point.

So the cannons and artillery support the defending troops only? I thought they would work as shore batteries that can damage ships despite not having a fleet around.

Right now the cannons and artillery aren't cannons and artillery, they're just additional troops. He will be changing that later on.

Been a while since I've been attacked - but I thought that the general gist was that some of the latest changes reduced the amount of land taken? How did this attack take so much land from me when I destroyed 1/4 of his big landers, crippled another 1/4 and 1/2 his medium landers, and damaged another big lander and the other meduum lander ??? And I had more than twice the troops to begin with ???

You've got ~7421 land right now, so that looks like it roughly lines up with the equation based on the info you provided

7421 * .05 * 7300 / 14750 = ~183 land

Accounting for the marines that didn't land due to having their ships get blown up, that number looks about right.
